  • Am I prepared to pass an aptitude test, based on mechanical reasoning, spatial relationships and numerical reasoning?
  • Am I prepared to attend apprentice school for eight hours, every two weeks, and 26 weeks a year for five years, while being employed by a piping contractor?
  • Am I interested in going beyond the basics~ to upgrade my skills with journeyman training, to take opportunities in technological training, to move into management ranks, or eventually, if I choose, into owning and operating my own company?
  • Am I prepared to invest the time and effort in a career that spells prestige, satisfaction and a very good income?

As a 636 Pipefitter, You’ll Have a Real Career.

What’s more, as an important part of the construction industry, pipefitting is well respected for its many contributions to everyone’s health and well being.  Pipefitters are paid well, too, with some journeymen earning a more than comfortable living after just a few years on the job.

What Does A Pipefitter Do?

Basically, Pipefitters cut, bend and join pipes.  Working on large industrial piping systems that carry steam, gases, and chemicals to supply power, heating and refrigeration, they work from blueprints and drawings – indoors, outdoors, in homes, hospitals, shopping centers, in every kind of structure from skyscraper to tunnel, on new construction and maintenance and remodeling projects.

Most Pipefitters work for mechanical contractors – so called, because they are the companies who take responsibility for the mechanical operations of a building.  That includes heating air conditioning, and the flow of liquids and gases.

As a member of Local 636, you will be a part of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing & Pipefitting Industry ~ the UA.  This international organization has over a 100 year history in fighting for higher work standards, promoting better working conditions, and sponsoring the finest apprentice and journeymen training available anywhere.

As a union Pipefitter you will be a trained professional, having come through a thorough five-year apprentice program sponsored by Pipefitters, Steamfitters, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Service Local 636 of the United Association.
That adds up to thousands of hours of training that prove you have the talent, the knowledge and the skill to perform a most important job in one of the most significant industries in today's economy.
